let’s elect more HOA officials so they can tell us how we should live.

I thought this was America, not Venezuella

Lehto is on the side of the truck owner, but he’s saying that it will come down to the judge’s legal interpretation of body damage.

He’s also saying something pragmatic. That if you have a garage, then you could just side step the whole issue by putting the truck in the garage. Lipka reportedly has two other vehicles in the garage.

So, either what’s in his garage is also not in a state to be parked in the driveway, or the man is standing his ground to make a point.

Ban HOAs and replace them with high+density housing surrounding a race track

This is what happens when you allow authoritarian governments control over your life and property. How dare you drive an old  truck. For your crimes, we will confiscate your home!

Murica!

The only way my house could be better is no HOA, but I do have the least-shit-giving HOA imaginable. As long as you don’t paint your house bright purple and  keep your grass under about 3 ft. high nobody cares.

I don’t have HOA because I am severely allergic to people telling me what to do.

EDIT: The primary purpose of a homeowners association is to manage a neighborhood’s common areas such as roads, parks and pools. Homeowners are obligated to pay dues which can be anything from $100 to $10,000 a year, depending on the neighborhood and its amenities.

By this logic, you can argue that you should no longer be obligated to pay property tax. Since you pay HOAs...

My condo association is the same way. The official rulebook is pretty oppressive, but the association does jack with them unless you really piss people off.

It freaking blows my mind that a HOA can even do that. There’s a guy in the FP that talked about him foreclosing on three homeowners over $555. The hell???

“ HOAs are evil!” Don’t live in a HOA controlled community.

“I can’t avoid an HOA in my suburban area that I want to live.” Then read all of the paperwork you’re signing and agreeing to.

“Well, I didn’t think that rule applied to ME.” One man’s patina is another man’s junker.

And either way, if he has a few cars, so be it. At this point it’s more a point of principle. If the HOA rule is written so broadly, they should tighten up the rules. So they can make something more enforcing in the future.

It will be interesting how this ends up. I think the truck looks great. But that’s immaterial.

I don’t hate on the HOAs though as long as they are reasonable.  We have one where I’m living and it works for us.

Well, where I live, if I want a house without an HOA I’m going to have to cough up over $1,000,0000 .

That said, it was still a consideration when we were shopping for a house and we reviewed the HOA bylaws of all the homes we were considering and talked to the neighbors. T he house we ended up buying was the one we liked the most AND had the least restrictive HOA. Our dues are $100 a year and go to maintaining the common areas, the playgrounds for the kids, and pay for a neighborhood wide pizza party on H alloween. It’s really not bad at all.

He could also roll over and pay the fines.  That’s the vehicle the HOA is using to try to foreclose.  I’m glad to see the guy is fighting it though.  But it could be any bylaw that is not being followed that could put the homeowner in this situation.

As far as I’m concerned my HOAs rules are very reasonable. I t’s like “don’t paint your house an obnoxious color, mow your grass sometimes, and no broken down junk cars in front of the house. ”

And that last one is interpreted very loosely because the guy across the street from me has 5 cars and I think only one of them actually runs.

The only thing that annoys me is a no “military vehicles” clause because I actually would like to get a Humvee or M1078 at some point. A guy that lives in the neighborhood behind me has one - maybe if I get one he’ll let me keep it at his place.

But yeah, I’ve yet to hear of anyone getting the HOA hammer brought down on them.

HOA bylaws are so all-encompassing that you could lose your home over anything if they don’t like you.

There’s a golf course near me that just went out of business. How amazing would it be if they replaced it with a rally course!

(for me, not any of the people who live on it)

Unfortunately that’s the contract you sign when you plop down half a million dollars for the privilege of owning a home subjected to  one of these awful HOAs.

HOAs should be to help, not hinder. I think it’s sad that this situation got to this point.

Neighborhoods do have assholes that ruin it for everyone.  Mine has had its share, and we we were able to protect everyone with the ability to fine and make liens.  No one ever talks about that side.

This is still America. You can still choose where and how you want to live...even if that means having someone tell you how to. If you are happy with it, who am I to say no? I am referring to HOA this pickup dude is dealing with. That should be outlawed.

If HOA wanted to maintain common ground/utility like a pool and/or grass and penalize someone ruining it... ok... but parking a damn fine car in a driveway... what gives? Who cares if paint is iffy? I see many cars with iffy paints... recent cars too. Manufacturers claim acidic rain. What are we supposed to do? Fight mother nature?

Oh yeah, I completely agree with you.  As with many things in life, the HOA doesn’t have to be bad, but people like this ruin it.

Ours aren’t too bad.  Just like regular laws, it can be down to how they get enforced.
